2011 EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS

Education and outreach are as critical to our mission as saving horses.  If you would like to schedule a field trip, program, event, or speaking engagement, contact Nancy at 518-962-8512 or horses@cmvhr.org.  These programs are offered at no charge as a community service.  Donations are accepted and appreciated.

2011 schedule:

Saturday, May 7 - family tour

Saturday, May 14 - family tour

Saturday, May 21 - This tour is for a 7 year old girl who has asked for gifts to CMVHR in lieu of birthday presents every year since she was 5 years old.  This year, she raised $277.  She is a blossoming young philanthropist, whose parents inspire us as much as she does through their encouragement and support of her choice.

July 9 - Volunteer workday for an 8 year old girl from NYC and her dad.  After the program, she submitted a story to American Girl magazine about her experience.

August 20 - Volunteer workday for 17 year old and her mom.  She has come every year since she was 10.  That first year, she came to give us $150 she raised at her birthday party by asking for gifts to CMVHR in lieu of presents.

September 10 - Visit from T-Bone's and Scooter's family.  Every year since adopting the boys, they have made the 4 hour trek to visit us at the farm.  Our adoptive parents become lifelong friends.

September 28 - Testify in court for Pops.  He was brought to us by authorities in May 2010, and the case just came to trial.

October 8 - Farm tour for prospective adopters.

October 9 - Visit by Cassandra Dunn, our 2011 college intern.

October 15 - Farm tour for a friend with whom we have reconnected after 30 years!

October 29 - Farm tour for prospective adopter.

October 29 - Visit by Cassandra Dunn and her roommate, Raechel.

November 19 - Volunteer workday for a dad and his 2 young children.  Also, farm tour for prospective adopter.

November 20 - Community service workday for several local teens.

November 26 - Volunteer workday for a mom and her 2 children.  Her youngest daughter (7) will have her birthday party here in 2012, and we are working with the school to arrange a field trip for her special "show and tell" project.

Westport Kindergarten Graduation
May 20 - Job Shadowing program for Westport School

This year, we welcomed a freshman who is interested in a career in equine barn management as part of
Westport School's Introduction to Occupations course.  The teacher has the students send a resume and letter of introduction in advance of the activity date.  When the student arrives, there is an introduction and brief orientation.  The student comes with a list of about 10 questions and is required to write an essay after the program about the experience.  We ask permission to receive a copy of the essay so we can see the student's interpretation of the program in order to make changes as necessary, to be the best it can be.

The first year we hosted this program, the student wrote a wonderful essay that started off very poetic about the smells, colors, and scenery.  About 1/2 way through the paper, there was an abrupt change when she wrote; "then we went in the house for lunch, and I quickly realized that these people care more about their animals than they do themselves because the barns are cleaner and in better shape than the house".  We laughed out loud when we read that and tell that story often because 5 years later, it's still true.

The first student has now graduated from SUNY Cobleskill with a degree in Equine Studies.  She has started a lesson and therapeutic riding program, and last year, she adopted Louie from us to be one of her lesson/program horses.

May 16 - June 20 - Preceptorship for Becker College Student

This year, we welcome our third student for a preceptorship, or externship, to earn credit for Veterinary School.  Our student this year is a junior at Becker College.  She will complete 200 hours of hands-on care with horses including mucking, grooming, training, hoof and dental care, veterinary work, wound care, and more.  She is studying to be a large animal vet (not just an equine vet), so she is also working with our cows and pigs as part of her practical experience.

Our first intern was a high school student earning credit for application to Veterinary School.  She earned her degree in Veterinary Science in 2008.

Regretfully, the second intern did not take the program seriously and we had to fail her after three warnings for significant violations of our program rules and the school's.  We work with the school to establish the curriculum and have to complete an evaluation at the completion of the program, or in this case, prior to completion.

We take this program, and our reputation hosting it, very seriously.
